VMware NSX and vRNI Enabling Customer Operations

Recently, we had a customer challenge our team to prove to them the operational gains and demonstrate the cross-functional tooling VMware provides to assist them in scaling from zero to hundreds of VMs on the platform. Our goal was simple – exhibit a complete lifecycle for any customer to go from evaluation to production operation thereby enabling customer operations. The result was a video summary demoing our enhanced tooling that complements our simple three-step workflow: environmental assessment, plan and enforcement, and then continuous monitoring.

Intel Optane support for vSAN, first HCI…

I am in Australia this week for the Sydney and Melbourne VMUG UserCon’s. Had a bunch of meetings yesterday and this morning the news was dropped that Intel Optane support was released for vSAN. The performance claims look great, 2.5x more IOPS and 2.5x less latency. (I don’t know the test specifics yet.) On top of that, Optane typically has a higher endurance rating, meaning that the device can incur a lot more writes, which makes it an ideal device for the vSAN caching layer.

Today, March 19th Intel announced the Intel® Optane™ SSD DC P4800X—the first flash device built on the much-anticipated 3D XPoint technology. This is exciting news for vSAN customers, since—as a result of Intel and VMware’s active collaboration—we are pleased to offer day 1 support of vSAN 6.5 and ESXi 6.5 with the Intel® Optane™ SSD DC P4800X. This is the first Intel Optane NVMe drive (375GB) to be made available with more coming soon (750GB and 1.5TB).

We have released a new set of videos to help customers understand in greater depth some of the new capabilities of vSphere 6.5 and PowerCLI 6.5. These videos use an innovative format known as the Light Board, which allows a presenter to white board their session while still speaking to the camera. The result is more engaging and easier to follow way of learning about a topic in more detail.

Why the Critical Piece of VMware’s NFV 2.0 is…

I mentioned in my blog yesterday that a network and addressing model was critical to edge computing and NFV. If that’s true, then could it also be true that having a virtual-network model was critical to vendor success in the NFV space? The VMware NFV 2.0 announcement may give us an opportunity to test that, and it may also ignite more general interest in the NFV network model overall.
